Depart early in the morning from your hotel in Chiang Rai and drive down to Doi Mae Salong. Visit the Akha and Yao villages which are located along the scenic route to the top of this mountain. Mae Salong, also known as Santikhiri, is an ethnic Chinese enclave inhabited by remnants of the Kuomintang (Nationalist) army of Chiang Kai Shek. After your visit to Mae Salong, you will head on to Therd Thai, where you can visit the former headquarters of the notorious drug baron Khun Sa, before continuing on to the village of Mae Moh, situated along a mountainous road with incredible views. Numerous Akha villages are located along this road. After a short ride, it is time to take a walk through the Chinese Haw village Phaya Phrai. You will pass a small Red Lahu village and a military outpost. Meander through an extensive tea plantation and visit the Chuifong tea factory, stopping for a taste of their delicious Ulong tea. Then continue to the Akha village of Laoma. Return to Chiang Rai late in the afternoon.
